The crowd was small in the cold outdoor weather as Edwards' Main Street Express pulled up for him to deliver his remarks, but he seemed as fired-up as ever, despite a grueling schedule and little sleep (and being outspent 6-to-1). When Edwards was asked by a reporter about Hillary Clinton's much-reported "Edward Muskie moment," where she appeared close to tearing up at a rally, Edwards (and Obama before him) refused to comment on same, saying, "Running for President is a tough process."
Edwards delivered his usual "stump" messages, but, this time, he was asked if he was going to quit the race if he didn't do well in New Hampshire. His response? "We have no intention of walking away (from the issues). Yes, we are in it to stay." The same questioner then asked if the Edwards campaign had enough money to continue the fight, and the former Senator from North Carolina (1999-2005) said, "This is not an auction; it is an election. Yes, we have the money and we have budgeted for the entire process."
"What if you don't win any primaries?" the questioner persisted.
"I cannot accept that premise," responded Edwards, with a smile. "I will win primaries."
Another new question came from a person in the back of the crowd who expressed the opinion that, if a draft were in force, there would be more pressure from the public to end the war in Iraq. Edwards did not equivocate. He said, "I don't favor the draft for a variety of reasons," and referenced his military advisers who advise him on such issues.
Some other interesting insights into the race in New Hampshire and beyond came from CQ Politics.com contributor Craig Crawford, who phoned into CNN (from Orlando, Florida) and said, "I think that Florida is being set up as a test, sort of like Off-Broadway."
