Dog Tricks: Jump Through Your Arms

This is a flashy trick which only needs one prop: You! During grade school may of us tested our friendships by doing the Death Drop. We would stand in front of our buddies, and let ourselves fall. We trusted they would catch us. This routine can be compared to that scenario. Your dog needs to have complete faith in you before attempting this trick without the hoop. Many fur balls become hesitant, and feel uncomfortable when asked to jump so close to our face. In a way we are asking them to perform a trust test. This jump will make people smile, while deepening the bond between you and your pet.

Before beginning this exercise, make sure Choobaka is comfortable performing the Hoop Jump.

The Basics:

1. Start wrapping your arms partway around the hoop, hold it away from your body, and give Choobaka the command to jump through.

2. Still holding the hoop, start to make a smaller circle with your arms, while bringing the prop closer to your body. Once Choobaka is performing in a steady manner, move onto step three.

3. Remove the hoop altogether. Have the dog jump through your arms. Start with an expanded 'arm circle', and gradually decrease it's size.

Tips:

-Do a few hoop jumps before hand to warm up.

-In the beginning, when you hold the hoop, kneel low to the ground, and hold the hoop away from your body. As Choobaka grows more comfortable with his 'human prop', bring the hoop closer to your body. Gradually decrease the size of your 'arm circle' until you rid yourself of the hoop all together. Go slow as some dogs may need time to adjust to this 'unusual' behavior.

-If your dog seems intimidated, remember to go slow, keep it fun, and offer a mountain load of encouragement.

-For the best results, keep sessions short, frequent, and fun! Not only will both of you enjoy yourselves more, but you will have the dog's full attention. Be enthusiastic, and your pet pooch will look forward to these brief educational interludes! To your companion this will become a wonderful game, while the attention you lavish on him will be the best reward of all!
