Stuck in a rut about what to do this Valentine's Day? Don't want to do the same song and dance of candy and flowers? There are some very creative and different things that you can do for your sweetheart that will make you stand out in the crowd. These items come from the heart, mostly, not from the local big box store. All of these ideas will be written with the woman as gift recipient but they will work equally well with a guy recipient.

Give her part of her childhood back

What this means is that you will be showing her that you listen to her and that you want to give her the things that she missed. Did she crave unicorn tea sets? Pine over the latest Atari game that she missed out on? Find it and give it to her. Check ebay, check the swap boards, you can even put up a free ad on craigslist and freecycle.org to try and find it. Keep in mind that things like this really mean that you will need to attempt your gift months in advance. This also works in your favour as it shows that you didn't get it the day before.

Give her part of yourself

Write her a poem, a letter, a short story telling about how the two of you met. Write it yourself for even more meaning, or have it professionally done by hiring a writer to do it for you. Obviously it will be better having it done yourself, no matter the quality, because it shows that you care. Having it professionally done is good too, but you will need to make sure it is personalized and deals directly with the two of you. Think retelling the first kiss, the first meeting, or any other important event in the life of your relationship.

Give her dinner

Skip the flowers, skip the chocolates, and skip the hearts wrapping paper. Cook her dinner. Extra points if you can't cook. By taking time to open a cookbook, buy the ingredients, and plan out the meal, you show her that she is worthy of both your time and your effort. It can be a fancy meal, or you can give her a very simple meal that is one of her favourites done up fancy. (Think sterling platters and domes that you can uncover to reveal her favourite way to have a cheeseburger fixed) Don't be surprised if you end up as the dessert!

Excellent ideas! I like the childhood idea, and I think I will try it out on hubby. He talks about a baseball card collection that he once had as a child and would like to have again.
