On January 3rd, 2008, pop star Britney Spears held her youngest son hostage in her Beverly Hills home after a custody dispute with her ex-husband, Kevin Federline. After a stand-off with police Spears was restrained and sent to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for a mental evaluation, sparking rumors that Spears is mentally ill. What mental illnesses could Britney Spears have? What could happen if she doesn't receive help? This is why Britney Spears is mentally ill - and at risk for suicide.

What Mental Illness Does Britney Spears Have?
What Mental Illness does Britney Spears have? It's possible she's suffering from any 4 illness: Bipolar Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and Postpartum Psychosis. It's possible she is mentally ill because of drug abuse, although she tested clean during her stay at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Here's what you need to know about these illnesses.

Bipolar Disorder, also known as Manic Depression, is a mental illness characterized by extreme mood swings and unstable behavior. As Britney Spears was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, she went through many moods, from crying and yelling to smiling and laughing. People with Bipolar Disorder are extremely excitable and active one day and depressed and suicidal the next day; their behavior is unpredictable. Bipolar Disorder is also linked to alcoholism and substance abuse, two things allegedly afflicting Britney Spears. If Bipolar Disorder is left untreated, it leads to increased hospitalization and suicide.

Borderline Personality Disorder is a mental illness characterized by unstable relationships, self-image, emotions, and thinking. Borderline Personality Disorder usually begins in early adulthood.

These are some of the symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder:

- Unstable self-image.
- Impulsive behavior with sex, substance abuse, reckless driving, and eating.
- Unstable relationships.
- Severe dissociative symptoms.

Uh, I got the information from official medical websites...bipolar can be like that, although it's not common. Cyclomania I think what it's called?

I think you have the definitions of bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder wrong. Bipolar disorder is an up and down that lasts for a week or more. There are depressions and times of mania or hypomania. Borderline Personality Disorder is more of a regulation of emotions, someone who can't control their emotions. While there are some similar traits to someone who is in a manic state during bipolar to that of borderline, borderline is more things that always happens like quick anger, or reactions to relationships. Bipoloar mania happens for a time (at least a week, maybe up to a couple of years), and during the other times, the person doesn't react the same way. Anyway, please look online for definitions of bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder. Take care.

While this was a very informative article, I'm of the opinion that a mental illness is more than a crutch than anything else for Britney Spears. I know that people suffer from these types of illnesses all over the world, but in light of her behavior over the last few years, I think it's just another PR stunt. She's a spoiled brat who can't take responsibility for her actions, which doesn't mean mental illness - it just means spoiled brat.

I like the way you presented this. Informative, yet presented in a way that makes it seem more relevant, and shameful to say, entertaining. I feel so bad for that girl, but its one of those things that its so horrible, you can't look away!

She seemed OK when she first started out. I think most of it is alcohol and drug abuse. Some of it attention, and publicity, and media makes it all seem worse.

This is a great article! I really feel for Britney, I feel like her super-controlled image when she first broke onto the scene surely didn't help her maintain sanity.

Super job! One look at the Us or People magazine that showed her in the ambulance and it was clear she was just not "with it". She tested negative for any drugs in her system and the police later retracted any statements about her having any substances in her that night. Many people with bipolar or other conditions tend to self-medicate with alcohol which isn't a longterm solution. If she has had a psychotic break or if postpartum depression and hormonal swings are a factor, that could make things that much worse. Nicely done!

Your writing/research shared of some possible causes is thorough and fair in justification and explanation. Brit may have many 'layers' to get through (and not without tears, as if ripping slowly through layers of an onion) before the core of her issues are figured out - I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she gets through this sooner than later - No one deserves such miseries.

It's a really sad situation. I think you did a good analysis. Drug problems can go along with any of the mental illnesses you discussed.
