Dear fans,

It is with great regret that I write this letter. This college football season has been chaotic, with four #1 teams and nine teams ranked #2. We saw the football powerhouses make way for teams like Kansas and Hawaii during the season, West Virginia established itself as a powerhouse team, and the debates over who was best in terms of team and conference went on for weeks.

Through all of this, I would like to apologize to you, the fan. Since 1998, you have been forced to watch the results of what is widely regarded as a flawed system: The BCS. I cannot deny the results of the past two seasons, which has rewarded weak non-conference play with a chance to be blown out on national television by a team with a lesser record but much more impressive list of opponents. The high-paying games this year were bad, and almost all were blowouts; the one that wasn't had sloppy written all over it. You probably wanted to watch the Gator, Capital One, and Outback bowls rather then the BCS match-ups provided. I can't say I blame you. It's been a crazy season.

That is why I am pleased to announce the possibility of a seeded plus-1 system. Some of us conference commissioners have decided, after this season, that's it may be a viable option for alleviating all this hatred you fans keep throwing our way. And some people are a bit more radical then others- like Georgia's Michael F. Adams, who has proposed an 8-team playoff. Alas, the BCS contract runs until 2009, but I assure you, change may be inevitable.

So, to you, the fans, I hope you will continue to support the game you love, and support us as we try to figure out this mess. It will take some time.

Sincerely,

John Swofford, ACC Commissioner/2008 BCS Chairman

Any one of these players would probably prefer a playoff system in college football- now maybe the commissioners are beginning to listen.

The current contract with the BCS runs until 2009, but think what could come about in 3 years...
