The Top 10 Greatest Super Bowl Teams
January always equates to the most special time in pro football for me. The holidays are over and things are back to normal around the house. However, things are anything but normal on the football field. It's playoff time once again and on that note, it's time to start planning your
Super Sunday festivities. The throes of the Super Bowl are nearly upon us. Since Super Bowl XVII (42) is right around the corner, I wanted to share some opinionated content regarding big championship games of the past 42 years and list my picks for the top 10 Super Bowl teams ever.
#10 - 1991 Washington Redskins (14-2)
Ranked only 18th in average yards per carry and led by ever consistent QB Mark Rypien, the Redskins had no problem handling the 13-3 Buffalo Bills in SB XXVI. Buffalo was ranked first in points scored, the Skins were ranked 2nd, but when all was said and done, Washington came out on top 37-24. The Skins had a +261 point differential which was tied for 2nd overall during the 1991 season. Their only two losses of the season were by a combined total of five points and the defense recorded 50 sacks. Despite the stats, some football "experts" rank this team even lower. Ironically, not one member of this team resides in Canton.
#9 - 2004 England Patriots">New England Patriots (14-2)
Super Bowl XXXIX would be the second year that New England would win the championship (having defeated Carolina the year before), and the second time they would win by only a three point margin. Oddly enough, when they defeated the Rams in SB XXXVI, so to was that margin of victory only a field goal in points total. Of all the teams that have been in three or more Super Bowls, if you take all of there three lowest margins of victory into consideration, New England's nine combined points is one of the lowest of all. I was reluctant to rank this team that high, especially after seeing what they did this past season (2007). But no matter what, the Belichick-Brady combination was just effective enough and they defeated the 13-3 Eagles by a score of 24-21.
#8 - 1986 New York Giants (14-2)
