I hadn't been in Steve and Barry's for a while; first off I found their nickel and dime approach to retail to be almost downright pedestrian and was a bit offended that anyone was offering clothing for as cheap. When they first opened I found that they were but the newest destination for $5 jeans; now Old Navy had filled this niche in specialty store retail years back when they first opened and what I had found there at the time wasn't much in the way of sophistication, but then again they were $5. While Old Navy had initially created consumers out of those looking for chic, yet cheap, clothing from the Gap they eventually improved in a lot of ways through aggressive marketing, improving their initial quality and becoming the flagship of the store, rather than a cheap and chic offering of the Gap.

So in time Old Navy proved themselves to be a serious competitor in retail; yet with Steve and Barry's the formula for doing so seems to be in having famous personalities co-opt their clothing and offer designer labels within the store that sell for slightly more than their own line. I checked out the store shortly before Christmas looking for deals; I have to say that out of the three designer labels they do have, EleVen By Venus Williams, Dear by Amanda Bynes and BITTEN by Sarah Jessica Parker, BITTEN is your best deal.

Keep in mind that EleVen and Dear are marketed towards a younger woman, the former towards young African-American women in particular. Yet there is something special to BITTEN that opens up the door for Steve and Barry's to appeal to an upscale consumer that would normally opt for H&M or The Gap. For one BITTEN has a universal appeal that none of the other Steve and Barry's offerings have; the attention to detail and the luxury of the apparel at this price point may catch some women off guard.

Cincinnati is typically ahead of the curve; when I was living in Dayton I noticed there were a lot of stores that weren't available there that were more on the pulse of what was going on with the rest of the country. Chances are the Cincinnati Steve and Barry's was there before it was in a lot of other cities, such as Akron or Dayton. Do they still have their Sak's Fifth I believe it was in one of the malls downtown. I sort of miss the retail scene in Cincinnati I used to love going to the malls there they offered quality retail in a compact space, many of them were multi-level and they blended in well with their surroundings, you didn't feel as though the mall was at the edge of the metro or anything. In comparison Dayton had two good malls, Dayton of course and Fairfield. So yeah for Cincinnati Steve and Barry's would have been the odd one out given the progressive retail there, though you could perfectly see it working in say, Middletown.

good article. We have an S & B here in Cincinnati that was around back when no one ever even heard of them. I agree it did feel a little K-martesque, but heck I still have jeans from there that are old yet still kickin'! SJP, I am not a fan of her, except for in the GAP commercials, lol.

Thanks again. I think she has more retail space than the other two labels I mentioned as well, so while they have 3 distinct lines hers is the largest in the store. It's all very interesting I suggest you check it out for yourself if you haven't been in a while. What I would like to see is a serious men's line there that isn't related to athletics, because they have two but they are focused towards basketball and golf.

This is a very, very well written review. Sarah Jessica Parker seems to have the Midas touch. Great job!
