"Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men." -Acts 5:29

In every person's life, there comes a time when decisions need to start being made for one's own self. Babies are great (or so they tell me), but if a man reaches 30 years old and is still clinging to his mother, eating strained peas and wearing diapers (or, in the case of certain children, eating diapers and wearing strained peas), they aren't so cute anymore. If the point in a person's life is never reached that they can come to decisions on their own, effectively living their own life instead of living like sheep and blindly following those around them, they are in that same boat.

In Christian circles, the primary concept of "good Christianity" is to follow after the "Man of God," whether that is a pastor, priest, or even "godly" parents. Following something, whether it is a man, or an idea, or a religion, has always been a cornerstone of what makes the difference between normalcy and aberrancy. Galileo Galilei was imprisoned for life for believing something that no one else did. Today, anyone who doesn't believe what he was imprisoned for would be considered crazy.

So, let's talk about the Christian trend of following what a man says and taking it for 100% truth, and we'll start by looking at some of the verses Christians will use to say you should...

"And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed (2 Thess. 3:14)."

This first verse seems to say that people need to listen to what the men of god say and, if they don't, they are to be shunned. Wrong already. Take a moment to read the chapter surrounding it. As a matter of fact, it's a short book, go ahead and read the whole thing, and if you want, go ahead and read the first one, too. Got it? Good, let's proceed.
