The Panthers fell apart after Jake Delhomme went down for the season - finishing with a 7-9 record. Steve Smith and Julius Peppers are two of the best players in the game, but they need more help around them. The Panthers can add pieces starting with the No. 13 pick in April's draft.

The Panthers started four different quarterbacks in 2007, which is never a good sign for an NFL team, including the ancient one, Vinny Testaverde. Steve Smith's production suffered as a result, collecting only 87 catches for 1,000 yards. The Panthers offense struggled to move the ball through the air (29th in the NFL) and scoring points (26th). The defense, once a top-5 unit, was only average in 2007. Rookie Jon Beason emerged as a productive starter, but Julius Peppers collected a mere 2.5 sacks with inconsistent play.

Going into the 2008 NFL draft, Carolina needs to decide on the quarterback position. Jake Delhomme has had a couple uneven seasons after the Super Bowl run, leaving some to question his status with the team. The team needs help at both safety positions and cornerback. Another solid offensive lineman or two would be a welcomed addition as well. Regardless of Delhomme's status, Carolina needs to draft a quarterback of the future. David Carr has been largely disappointing since arriving.

With the #13 pick in the 1st-round, Carolina can target Kenny Phillips (Miami safety), cornerback Antoine Cason (Arizona) and offensive tackle Chris Williams (Vanderbilt). Even with Chris Gamble and Ken Lucas, 3rd corners are playing more and more with 3-wide receiver sets becoming normal. Antoine Cason would be a major shot in the arm if Miami stud Phillips is off the board by pick #13.
