Why are people always so quick to discount the Clintons? Only last week, the US news media was already talking about "Hillary Clinton dropping out of the Presidential race". Six days later Hillary Clinton has just won the New Hampshire primaries, a voting outcome that, in the grand scheme of things, is much more important than the Iowa Caucuses.

The New Hampshire outcome is not surprising as Senator Clinton's husband, President Bill Clinton, also lost Iowa in 1992 and then came second in New Hampshire. It was there he earned the nickname "The Comeback Kid". Obviously, he then went on to win the Democratic nomination for President. His wife is now on course to do the same and has already out stepped her husband by winning in New Hampshire. Pundits are already calling her the 'Comeback Gal".

Locked in a tight race with Senator Obama from the minute the election returns started to come in, Hillary won very big with women. She in fact ended up with a higher percentage of women voting for her than did Obama in Iowa. She also was popular with older voters, both men and women.

The Democrats had a record voter turnout in New Hampshire so, whichever way you look at it, having two such strong Democratic candidates was good for the primary. However, because of Senator Clinton's involvement in politics for more than 20 years, it's more than likely she will 'hang in there' longer than Obama.

With only 2 years experience in politics, the big mistake Obama made in New Hampshire was to step back and wait for the clock to run out. With polls showing him running 13% ahead of Clinton in New Hampshire before the vote, he sat back on his laurels and waited. Hillary, who understands how quickly things can change in politics, fought until the end and that fight won her the victory.

Takeaways
  • Hillary Clinton ran at least 3-4% ahead of Obama the minute the results began to come in.
  • Senator Clinton did well with women voters and with older voters.
  • Senator Clinton is now being called 'The Comeback Gal'.

I don't really keep up to date with the run for the White House. But it does seem that Hillary Clinton has won many hearts. Sophie

I thought Hillary's emotional moment showed her human side and actually helped her in New Hampshire. Obama is perhaps the most eloquent speaker...perhapa a little "preachy" though. I didn't appreciate Edwards comment about Hillary's emotional moment. He'd beginning to look more like a political shark to me and I don't think it's serving him well...and I agree with Mike, Edwards smile is appearing to be an increasingly fake smile. But, I'd vote for any of the three over any Replubican offer...we must get them out of office if we are going to accomplish anything in this country.

Mike, thanks for the correction on Obama. CNN was reporting today he had '2 years experience' in the US senate, which was what I was going off. Should have checked that fact :-) And oh I AGREE with you on Edwards, he's so fake isn't he :-) As far as time goes, we're 12 hours AHEAD of US Eastern time in Bangkok so if it's 1pm in New York, it's 1am in Bangkok the next day. The primaries have been working out great for me, because the results are usually announced around 10am which is when I'm at the computer working and listening to CNN.

Fabletoo, I thought of one more thing, which is that while I'm becoming more impressed with Hillary, I would be more impressed if she would show just as much emotion over voting the wrong way on the Iraq War as she showed Monday when she thought she was going to lose again. What she said Tuesday night was that "we are going to end the war the RIGHT way," which I guess means she still thinks this is some sort of winnable war. More troops to "end it" by "winning?" Hopefully that's not the plan. Meanwhile, Obama decided that he is losing votes among the patriotic crowd and so Tuesday he rather cynically added a "support the troops" line to his stump speech.

Hi Fabletoo. What time is it where you're at? Hillary was very wise post-vote because she kept her victory speech more low key, where as last week I thought Obama was gloating a little. The TV said, among the little they said, that she not only did good with women but especially women 60 and older. Left unsaid was that this would be the group most resistant to a Black candidate, and Obama won't get a turn in an integrated state until South Carolina. FYI on experience, Obama has not 2 years but 11 in elected office, 8 as an Illinois state senator (which is good because so much fed money goes through the states) and 3 in the senate for the 11 total. H. Clinton has 7 in the U.S. Senate for a total of 7. Overall, Hillary has shown me enough that I would probably vote for her if she's the nominee, which I wouldn't have said a month ago. As for Edwards, I had never really watched as well as listened, but tonight I saw that he has the most FAKE smile! -- Mike
