Sunshine: Danny Boyle Directs the Light and Darkness

Something so bright and dark.

Sunshine was directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, a team that worked together on the amped up zombie film 28 Days Later. The cast of Sunshine includes Cillian Murphy (also in 28 Days Later), Rose Byrne (28 Weeks Later), Chris Evans (Fantastic 4), Michelle Yeoh (Memoirs of a Geisha), Cliff Curtis( Blow) and Mark Strong( Stardust) amongst others.

The plot for Sunshine revolves around that the sun is dying and life on Earth is beginning to freeze. A team is sent to the sun to deposit a nuclear payload in hopes of reviving the dying star. This is the second incarnation of the mission with a failed attempt occurring 7 years previous; crew and ship having disappeared.

The first 30 minutes of this film are of slow paced intrigue; if you get bored: stick around. The next part of the film is a space mission disaster movie scenario. The final act is almost straight up scary, horror thriller. Aside from all of the cuts to still photos of outer space stuff this makes for one nice blend of entertainment.

Director Danny Boyle shows that he is still very hip and relevant and once again has taken out of focus visuals and used them to stress emotional impact. Seriously, the last potions of this film may be nothing but shaky cameras and blur, but it is very intense.

Sunshine is a film that was overlooked by many in 2007, however, now that it is out at your rental or movie stores there is no reason to pass it up. I'm not the only one spreading good word of mouth and I'm not the only going to say that Sunshine is a good ride; even though ultimately it may be a bit too bleak for some.

Sunshine is bright and dark and builds up to a scary level of intensity before leaving you satisfied with your viewing choice.
