Much has been said in recent history in some circles about the power of positive thinking. Motivational speakers have told us that we can be rich, healthy, and powerful just by thinking our way there. The most recent positive thought fad was the bestselling book and DVD The Secret which met with phenomenal financial success for its creators. I haven't read it or watched it, but from what I gather it is a repackaged sell for positive thought. I have always taken these things with an often large grain of skeptical salt. While I tend to be fairly rational and scientifically minded, I also recognize that there are things that we simply don't have any grasp of about the universe. Which leaves the possibility for amazing phenomena pretty wide open.

I can also agree that positive thinking does have some benefits. It allows us to gain some control of our mental life and by proxy our physical lives. As a willful act I do believe it can help people to engage in behavior that will help them become successful and happy in whatever way they choose. This is certainly good, but it is hardly some secret magic trick. The real "secret" is that there is no secret. There is no shortcut to success. Positive thinking will not make a new car and fabulous house suddenly appear, but it will change the way we think about our motives and behaviors and will influence how we approach our habits and activities so that we can bring the things we want into manifestation in our lives.
