McDonald's Sweet Tea Review

Who doesn't like McDonald's? Just about everyone has been there at least once. What is it that keeps us coming back? It has to be the hot crispy food and ice cold sweet drinks. Now, the huge restaurant chain is trying to lean towards more of a southern style flair by introducing popular southern food favorites such as their new Sweet Tea.

My first thought when I heard that they had come out with Sweet Tea was that, do Americans really need any more sugar?

After some research, I have discovered that the amount of sugar in the medium sized Sweet Tea from McDonald's was lower than the sugar in a medium Coke that most people choose to go along with their meal. The McDonald's Sweet Tea weighed in at 150 calories with 38 grams of sugar and the McDonald's Coca-Cola weighed in at a significantly higher 210 calories with a whopping 58 grams of sugar! So really unless you are drinking diet cola, the Sweet Tea isn't too bad on the sugar if you indulge responsibly.

The south has prided themselves on their down home cooking and especially their market for homemade sweet tea, for some in the deep south it is a household staple.

I have traveled in recent years with my family through the southern United States and found that sweet tea is especially popular in North Carolina, South Carolina, Southern Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia. When we stated in South Carolina for our vacation, every restaurant we went assumed we wanted sweet tea, if we asked for unsweetened they looked at us funny. We just smiled and said we were from Michigan and they seemed to understand immediately.

Last week I tried the McDonald's brand Sweet Tea for the first time. I was impressed. Usually if I'm in a thirst quenching mood, and water just wont do, I will choose decaffeinated unsweetened tea. When I ordered McDonalds's Southern Style Chicken Sandwich and a small fry, I thought I would try the Sweet Tea to compliment the meal.

The tea of course is served cold over ice, the initial rush is a taste of sugary sweetness. If you are not keen on sugary beverages, this tea may not be for you. I would have to say that the sugar over powers the taste of the tea itself, but not in a bad way.
