With all of the changes regarding international travel and new discount travel websites popping up over the last few years, many first time travelers to the U.S. from Canada are confused about what kind of documentation to bring and how to plan for their trip.

How can you avoid travel problems when entering the U.S.?

1. Bring your passport
Although the status as to whether or not you HAVE to have a passport to enter the U.S. from Canada changes frequently, it is best to always pack your passport along with your driver's license and birth certificate. Be sure to bring a photocopy as well and leave a photocopy at home.

2. Research your destination and hotel
Make sure the place you are staying is in the kind of neighborhood you feel safe in. Make sure the hotel is a reputable establishment, and if booking your room online use a trusted website.

3. Don't bring restricted objects
If arriving by plane do not bring lighters, matches, knives, nail files, or bottles of liquids, gels or fluids. If coming by car make sure you are not bringing any prohibited plants, fruits or animals with you.

4. Check your criminal record. You won't fool the border guard.
If you have a criminal record, consult a legal professional before traveling. Depending on your previous offences you may be denied entry to the U.S., or to certain states within the U.S. If you have a youth record that has not been sealed or there is a charge you feel is wrongful or outdated consult a lawyer about getting a pardon before traveling.

5. Pay attention to emergency info
At the beginning of each flight, a flight attendant will explain emergency procedures. They aren't blabbing as pre-flight entertainment, they are giving info that could help save your life in an emergency.

6. Don't speed
In most states anyone from outside the country caught speeding must pay fines on the spot. In order to avoid a significant dent in your travel funds and delays in your trip keep your vehicle to the speed limit.
