Just about everyone is looking for ways to save money and cutting costs at the grocery store is one way to do it. Grocery shopping can put a big dent in anyone's budget, but by keeping certain things in mind and being an informed consumer there are ways to save money.

First of all, you need to keep some very basic things in mind.

Remember to always make a list before you shop. This helps to get you in and out of the store faster and cuts down on impulse buying.

Also, do not grocery shop when you're hungry. You may have heard this one before and it's very true because if you're hungry while shopping you're much more likely to grab a bunch of snacks or food items that you don't need really need.

Always compare prices! Compare the prices of different brands and see where you can save. Often store brands are the cheapest but this is not always the case. Also compare prices for different forms of the same food such frozen, canned or fresh.

Read labels to make sure that you're getting your money's worth. If you look at the ingredient label of a product and see that it's mostly fats or sugars then it's a waste of money, not to mention it's not very healthy.

Some people like to save money by shopping for sale items at different stores. But keep in mind that if you do this you could end up paying at the gas pump with all the extra driving that you may end up doing.

Now, let's divide the foods into groups to see even more ways that you can save.

Fruits and Vegetables

Buy fresh fruits and vegetables that are in season.

If what you're looking for is not in season then try buying it frozen or canned. Sometimes these can be less expensive.

Buying fruits or vegetables in ready-made trays can be very expensive. Instead, compare the cost of buying individual items and then preparing them yourself.

When buying bagged items weigh the bag before choosing it. Sometimes that 5 pound bag of apples may end up weighing slightly less which would be a loss for you. Or, if luck is on your side, it will end up weighing a little more and you'll get more for your money.
