Why Do the American People and Media Care so Much About Politician's Romance?

As a French girl, I do not really care who my President is dating! What's the big fuss?? Can you people and media get over it?
The President is elected to do a job not to be a superman. He could make out with 10 different women, for what I care. Like everybody, he can divorce, remarry...
Sarkozy was the first President to divorce while in office that's why some newspapers talked about it. But if you check Le Monde, they only dropped a line. Of course some newspapers, more tabloid, made the front cover with this news.
The only persons really criticizing his love life are the French political opponents. I am a strong supporter of the opposition but eh guys, you have to let it go when it is not worth it! Nobody made a fuss when Segolene Royal (former President Candidate) and Francois Hollande (Opposition Secretary) broke up this summer. Nobody cares. Even after seeing some summer pictures of Hollande with another woman. The only media that should be interested in this kind of story are the tabloids.
Romance should never be part of the political debate! Please!
Maybe some American should be more open-minded like those politicians who try to look clean and perfect and then you find them in the airport restrooms! There is too much social pressure in the U.S. or maybe we, French people, pass for being more liberal but I really don't think so.
I am not excusing any politicians for their behavior; it's just that I don't think their love life is very relevant (except for the guy of the airport restrooms who was preaching against what he was doing, stupid).
Sarkozy was never preaching against divorce. We have to come clean about what we want from our politicians. I do not want a weekly report about what he ate, drunk or who he made up with.
BUT I want to know what he has done regarding "x" project. I want to know where my country is heading so that I could approve or disapprove his actions. I do not want to judge his private business, the same way I do not want anyone judging mine.
