While traveling in north Alabama, a fun attraction for the whole family is Sequoyah Caverns in Valley Head, Alabama. Located off of Interstate 59, Sequoyah Caverns has become a favorite spot for many folks passing through on their way to other destinations.Sequoyah Caverns are named after Sequoyah, a Cherokee Indian who singlehandly developed the Cherokee alaphabet. Sequoyah had a Cherokee mother and a German father and was born in Tennessee. He fought alongside Sam Houston and Andrew Jackson in the battle of Horseshoe
Sequoyah Caverns is best known for its reflecting water pools, underground lakes that reflect the beauty of the caves. Visitors to Sequoyah Caverns will get to see many beautiful cave formations and wonders on the guided tour. The best feature of the caverns is the constant pleasant temperature that is a nice and refreshing relief from a hot day.
Next to Sequoyah Caverns is The Ellis Homestead where visitors can get a taste of how life was in the 1800's. James Ellis moved his family to the area near where Sequoyah Caverns is located in 1841. Their hard work allowed for the family to accumulate the land that would later be known as Sequoyah Caverns. The Ellis Homestead stands as a reminder of the areas past and history. Besides getting a glimpse at life in the 1800's, guests can mine for gems. There are plenty of animals on the farmstead to see including deer and goats. Peacocks roam the cavern grounds, and a stream is filled with rainbow trout. Bring your lunch and picnic on the grounds. Next to Sequoyah Caverns is also a campground with a swimming pool, hot showers, and laundry facility.
Sequoyah Caverns is a great stop for weary travelers or is also a great vacation destination. Either way the caverns are a beautiful memory to have of Alabama. Even if you have been before returning to Sequoyah Caverns never gets old as it is like returning to see an old friend. The land is beautiful and the caverns are magnificant.
