If you have someone in your life who loves to cook, a customized apron makes a great personalized gift! (This idea came to me a few years ago when my mother said that she wanted an apron for Valentine's Day, and I couldn't find anything on the market.)

This project requires very little skill. Young children can help with the majority of the project, provided that they don't use the iron. This is also a great way to introduce older children to the 'fine art' of ironing.

The impetus behind this project is the thought that goes into making the gift personal. Before you head out to the craft store, check the list below to come up with some ideas of what you want the apron to look like.

You'll need:

An apron. If your very handy with a sewing machine, you could make one. If you're like me, you can buy one at a craft store. Aprons come in a variety of colors: red, black, blue, white, denim, and natural; to name a few. Choose a color that you think your special cook would like best.

Appliques. (Appliques are iron-on embellishments.) The most obvious choice for Valentine's Day is hearts. There are many styles and colors to choose from, which allows for a very personal touch. Perhaps your cook would love sequins and metallics, or maybe a country look would suit him or her better.

There's also the option of using appliques that reflect the personality of your gift recipient. For example: dog appliques for the dog lover, appliques of needles and scissors for the crafter, cars for the NASCAR fan, or a team-themed apron for the sports fan!

An iron. All you need is a regular old clothes iron, which you probably already have.

Three easy steps:

1. Wash, dry, and iron the apron. (You want to make sure it's clean, pre-shrunk, and free of wrinkles before you begin.)

2. Place your appliques on the apron. Arrange and re-arrange until you've found the "perfect" look,

3. Following the directions on the applique package, adhere the appliques to the apron using a clothes iron. Let cool.

Nice idea :) And actually ... my ex always wore an apron - like the kind that they market for bbq'ing.

Sophie- I don't know any men who wear an apron while cooking, but I didn't want to be sexist about the article! :-)

My husband is the cook in the family. But I don't think I could get him to wear an apron. Sophie

This is a great idea-- I especially like the thought of hiding a gift certificate in the pocket.
