Can an Online Degree Program Boost Your Career?
So it seems pretty simple- you log on to your online college and sign up for a class. You pay them directly through your credit card and the next day you have access to a virtual classroom. There are other virtual students, a virtual professor, and you can even raise your hand virtually. Sounds wonderful right? Well, not so fast-some employers are putting the breaks on accepting degrees earned from online programs.
Why exactly? Phillip Hall, a HR director, explains that with online degree programs there is no certainty. There is no way to tell if the students are doing the research themselves or having someone else submit it for them. The world of online college is open to abuse for those who wish the cheat the system. Although the degree may look good on your resume an employer has no idea if you have actually learned the material necessary. To some employers, an online degree is like having no degree at all. Hall adds that most employers will agree that people will succeed on merit in their careers and not because of a piece of a paper earned from a computer.
However, some strongly disagree. Many students and professionals can agree that an online degree from a properly accredited institution can be just as valuable as one earned in the classroom. A quality education can be derived from the Internet if a student is willing to put the effort in. It is true that those who wish to gain an education will take the opportunity. Online learning requires proper research into which schools offer what an individual student needs. There are many different formats available that can provide concrete ways to learn the material. The world of online education also offers students the ability to learn at their own pace, when the time is convenient for them.
