It's long been known that your job can cause all sorts of health and emotional problems, particularly if you are unhappy in your job or work in a hazardous environment, but most people probably wouldn't think their job could be making them fat! Obesity and overweight in America has been on the rise for years, and researchers are constantly looking for new ways to identify causes and prevent or slow this epidemic.

With more electronics, technology, and machines, some jobs that used to be manual labor are now performed by operators sitting behind a computer screen or machine controls. Where once we had to walk to a co-workers offices to give them a message, now we can just push a button for the intercom or shoot off an email.

When the average person works 7-10 hours per day, and if most of that time is spent in a sedentary job, it's no wonder it's hard to find time to keep active along with all the other responsibilities of life.

Let's look at the reasons your job might be making you fat:

Your job might be making you fat because... You Forget To Eat:

I now this sounds counter-productive and forgetting to eat sounds like it should result in weight loss, but that's not the case. It's not unusual for an American worker to wake and skip breakfast in a rush to head to work or get the family off to school or work. Then a deadline or finances or time simply keeps one from eating lunch, or else eats only a small lunch, and then back at the grindstone.

Then what happens? Well, you probably leave work, run errands, pick up kids or groceries or run to pay bills, then make it home and you have homework, housework, personal responsibilities, and the like. Finally, sometime after seven in the evening, you decide to eat a big meal, and then you sit and don't move until bedtime, where you sleep and don't move for the next 6-8 hours or so.

With this lifestyle, the only big meal of the day is eaten after all activity that would burn off the calories from that meal have ceased!

Your job might be making you fat because...You Don't Move Much at Work:

Takeaways
  • Weight gain can be gradual and obesity can sneak up on you when your job might be making you fat!
  • Sedentary lifestyle or a sedentary job can lead to weight gain.
  • Adjusting your activity level on the job can reduce or eliminate your job making you fat!

OOPS! Sorry. That should read "so I'm NOT stuck in my computer chair all day." My fingers were working faster than my brain!

The eating out and snacking from the vending machines used to kill me! This has been easier for me now that I'm working from home. I stock the house with healthy snacks and try to take exercise breaks so I'm stuck in my computer chair all day. I love the idea of doing core strengthening exercises and stretches at your desk. Great advice!

Lack of movement and eating out have packed on a few pounds for me. I really need to get away from those habits.

I think part of being an accountant is having that stressful month end snacking. I love the idea of putting it in the car, of course once it hits 115 degrees it will be hard to do. around here. :)

Some jobs are naturally not very healthy. I've had such a job and will try to avoid them in the future.

It all boils down to all things in moderation... :)

Great article, as usual, M, I've found that working in Hospitality has helped to plump me up past the comfort level of my blue jeans. We get all the leftover filet mingeon and cakes and all that which doesn't get served to party guests, which sounds great at first, but really takes a toll when that's all you've eaten for a solid week. Another point that's been hurting me is all the cholesterol. We're not allowed to eat the good stuff, so we end up eating junk.

Great article, this should be passes along during department meetings.

That's fair in some sense. I just know people who aren't allowed to leave their desk or go to their car because either a) their busy schedule doesn't permit it (white collar middle management) or b) their boss won't let them set their own schedule (blue collar). Not a worry though -- good advice throughout.

But hon, I said, "...somewhere where you can access them if you want or need a snack (and choose healthy snacks too!)"... so I'm not advocating not eating snacks. The point is to put them out of easy reach where you can eat without thinking about it, but rather when you truly know you want or need a healthy snack and can go and get it to consume it, instead of absentmindedly snacking without realizing you're doing it. Thus, "...not in your desk where you can just grab a snack and eat without thinking."

I am concerned about "Keep the snacks out of your office. No candy, no chips, no beef sticks, not even hard candy! Put these snacks in the employee break room, locker, your car, somewhere where you can access them if you want or need a snack (and choose healthy snacks too!), but not in your desk where you can just grab a snack and eat without thinking." If one eats healthful snacks, it actually is a positive as it both gives nutrients and also encourages the metabolism system. If we eat regularly, our metabolism actually moves a bit faster than if we eat nothing at all. Healthy foods gives us a slightly stronger metabolism as well, only because it's not trying to break down harder food like sugar-laden snacks. Metabolism is an important aspect for how we keep our weight.

Very true. Number 1 was the reason I gained weight. I eat on time now and I also have a pedometer I wear while at work and a stepper in my office to help me get movin!

My job is very sedentary, so I make sure that I take two 15 minute walks during my work day- it also serves great "mental break" time! (Good for the spirit, I say!)
