I got emailed a couple of nasty comments from a woman this past week who was clearly uneducated about the picture of adoption today with regard to birth moms.

I had written and published an article entitled "How Adoption for Birth Moms Has Changed Since the 1960s" on printnpost.com (Get Paid to Blog). Since I am a birth mom, the topic of adoption is particularly passionate with me and in the seven, almost eight years since I placed my daughter in a semi-open arrangement I have gotten all kinds of ignorant and incredible responses to my decision.

The woman who responded to my latest article commented:

"The way adoption has changed since the 60'sd is that they have beocme privatized and entrepreneurial - a $3-4 billion dollar/year industry in the US. As a result of the increased acceptance of single parentage, and availability of birth control since the 60's...the "supply" of babies to adopt has dwindled greatly. This, in turn, places far greater pressure on the few mothers who might think about or consider adoption, or who are being pressured by their parents or boyfriend. Their babies are a hot commodity and adoption agencies spend MILLIONS marketing to these women, convincing them of the nobolity of letting their child go to strangers, and not telling them they guilt and grief it will cause, forever, regardless of getting photos, letters or even seeing their child again. And, it is yet to be known how the children of this new generation of "open adoptions' will feel knowing their mothers "chose" adoption in order to pursue education or carers. or how the mothers themselves will feel when they realize what they have given up." (http://www.printnpost.com/articles/2374/1/How-Adoption-for-Birth-Moms-Has-Changed-Since-the-1960s-/Page1.html).

To which I responded:

Did You Know?
The role of the birth mom has changed enormously since the 50s.
