When it comes to getting a computer, you have two options: you can either go to a store (or a website) and just buy one that you want, or you can pick out the individual parts and put it together yourself. So how do you decide which is better for you? There are key advantages to either one, and in this article I will address these advantages to help you make a decision.

Buying a PC

Buying an already assembled PC has many advantages, and this is what most people end up doing. These advantages range over many things.

  • Most importantly, you don’t have to assemble anything!Just take it out of the box, plug it in, and you’re good to go.All you have to do is start up the computer and personalize some settings; anyone can do it.

  • Along the lines of the last one, most software you want can be pre-installed on the computer before you get it.This saves you a lot of time, as custom PCs have to be set up from scratch, with no software installed.

  • If you’re on a very small budget, you can find a PC that you can afford.A computer today, if you wait for one on sale, can cost you as low as $300, sometimes even less than that. You can’t really make a custom PC for that price. The lower the price point of your computer, the less of a premium you’re paying to a company to assemble it for you.The cheapest computers are where buying a PC really trumps over building your own.

  • Repairs are pretty hassle-free, besides the waiting time, since you know where the computer has to go: back to where you bought it from. With individual parts, you have to figure out which one is broken, and then send that part back to its manufacturer; sometimes narrowing the problem down to a particular component can take a long time, and you’re better off if Dell is willing to do it for you.

Takeaways
  • If you're up to it, assembling a PC can save you a lot of money.
  • Custom PCs give you a lot of options.
  • The cheapest store-bought PCs are cheaper than the cheapest custom PCs.
