There has been a big media blitz about John Mark Karr, who was arrested in Thailand August 16 and, according to media reports, has confessed to the murder of JonBenét Ramsey (some reports indicate that his confession may be false, but police say he has supplied convincing details of the crime.)

I think it is really important that JonBenét's parents have been vindicated.  It is very sad to see that many people still believe they committed the murder, even after this recent development.  I can't imagine what it must have been like to lose your daughter, and see the police botch the investigation, and watch them blame you for the murder and defame you in the media, and know that the real killer is still out there.  It has doubtless been a painful decade for the Ramseys.

While for several years now I have not believed that John and Patsy Ramsey killed their daughter, I did and still do believe that they were somewhat responsible for her death.  They sexualized JonBenét from an early age, with her participation in beauty pageants.  She wore copious amounts of makeup and was taught to move like an adult woman.  This sexualization is most evident in the publicly released videos: with all the makeup, she looks like an adult, not like a child.  She is dressed like an adult, not like a child.

According to media reports, Thai authorities quote John Mark Karr as saying that he was in love with her and she was a beauty queen.  Although any child could have caught Karr's eye, the Ramseys put JonBenét in a position that made her a target.  The pageant circuit is rife with storied of girls encouraged to flirt with judges.  A very small child is too young to discriminate judges as a separate set from all adults, so this encouragement to flirt further sexualizes children and puts them in dangerous situations.

Takeaways
  • John and Patsy Ramsey are somewhat responsible for the 1996 murder of their daughter JonBenet.
  • JonBenet's parents sexualized their child in pageants, which led to her death.
  • JonBenet's participation in pageantry made her an obvious target for murderer John Mark Karr.
Did You Know?
Patsy Ramsey, JonBenet's mother, died June 24, 2006 of ovarian cancer, which she had battled for more than a decade.

First of all Patsy did not wear a blue jacket - it was red. That is basic info one should know if attempting to talk about this case

There is certainly a difference between "asking for it" and engaging in risky behavior. As a child, Jonbenet did not have the wisdom to protect herself from the potential consequences of participating in pageants and dressing up the way she was encouraged by her parents to do. Her parents were responsible for protecting her, and they failed. Whether they failed by committing the crime or by not taking enough security precautions in their home is not something I can answer, but I agree that they do bear responsibility for the sexualization of a child.

And the rape victim asked for it -- did you see the dress she was wearing? Not to mention the gay guy that walked into a redneck bar, he had to know he must have wanted that beating. Honeatly, when are people going to learn that they need to live their lives not by their own standards and morals, but constantly looking over their shoulders to make sure their behavior pleases the community. After all, people can't help themselves when it comes to attacking sluts/queers/little girls wearing makeup. They were asking for it!

Thanks for the California snobbery, Melissa. "...apparently in the South and Middle West this goes for culture." No, it's considered pretty creepy everywhere, except by the people who are actively involved with it. Karr is probably a liar, among his other pathologies, but the Ramseys did, in fact, participate in the sexualizing of a pre-pubescent girl. Now excuse me while I get back to watching rasslin' and gettin' ready to go to the tractor pull tomorrow.

Not a disgusting opinion at all, to those of us still fairly certain that death for JonBenet did not come from without, but from within, viz., the authorities could not clear Patsy i) from having authored the ransom note, and ii) from having contributed the fibers on the garotte, which matched those from a blue blazer of hers. As well, there were the vaginal injuries--both new and old; on the latter, did someone break into the house repeatedly? If not--how'd they get there?

What a disgusting opinion. Her parents may have been responsible for her moral upbringing, but not for anything a KILLER did to their child. How dare you judge them or any parent! Even if this case were solely about the ethics of beauty pageants, you are in no position to know the damage or benefits of their child's experience. However, as this case is certainly about the murder of a child, your opinion is cruel, unjustly judgmental, and totally lacking in the understanding of criminal behavior and responsibilty. The parents of JonBenet are victims in this mess. And you just kicked them. Shame on you!
