Spend Halloween at Ghostly Spy House Museum at the Jersey Shore

One of the Most Haunted Places in America

Are you already looking for something fun to do this Halloween? Then I strongly recommend you take a drive to the Jersey shore and check out the grounds of the Spy House Museum.

Located in Port Monmouth, New Jersey, the Spy House started its life as a one-room cabin in 1648. As the years passed, more and more sections were built on to the existing structure. First known as the Whitlock-Seabrook House after the family that owned it for generations, the house got

its new name during the American Revolution, when it was suspected that people were spying on the activities of the British Navy from this location. The British sailors put down their anchors and came ashore to eat and drink in the house; meanwhile, their empty ships were ravaged by the colonists. The Brits even tried - unsuccessfully - to burn the house down due to these fears. But Spy House lived on, and went through many different incarnations over the decades, from personal home, to pub, to hotel, to brothel and pirate hotspot. The place has truly seen it all!

Due to its age and sometimes violent history, Spy House is said to be home to over thirty different ghosts, each with their own quirks and stories. I was lucky enough to visit Spy House on Halloween night several years ago, and was treated to a tour around the three-story building by a female psychic named Jane Doherty. I'm very open to unusual possibilities (although I won't tell you I see something strange if I don't), and there was a definite eerie vibe, particularly in the fireplace area adjacent to the cellar. Legend has it that a rather nasty crime occurred at the bottom of the cellar stairs, and our guide told us that the caretakers of the house kept the cellar door locked at all times since the negative energy there was so strong. Honestly and truly, you could feel that rage just hanging in the air.
