After the dismal ratings received by the recent People's Choice Awards, everyone was pinning their hopes on the 2008 Golden Globes to put the glitz and glamour back into award ceremonies. That, of course, didn't happen when the Hollywood Foreign Press decided to announce the 2008 Golden Globe winners via a press conference. With NBC and Dick Clark Productions out hundreds of thousands of dollars for upfront money on marketing, advertising, and other fees, it is doubtful that the globes will be a pleasant topic of discussion anytime soon. Lawsuits are supposedly already in the works because the Hollywood Foreign Press denied NBC the exclusivity rights for which they feel they paid.
All of that aside, however, the real shame was that some outstanding actors, movies, and television shows were denied all of the hoopla afforded their peers before them. This year's announcement of award winners wasn't just anticlimactic, it was down right boring.
Had the show actually happened, it very well might have kept everyone on the edge of their seats. There were so many upsets and surprises this year that it kept everyone guessing what was coming next. For what it is worth, here is a list of the 2008 Golden Globe winners.
The nominees for best performance by an actor in a supporting role in a series, mini-series, or motion picturemade for television were:
Ted Danson for Damages,
Kevin Dillon for Entourage,
Jeremy Piven for Entourage,
Andy Serkis for Longford,
William Shatner for Boston Legal, and
Donald Sutherland for Dirty Sexy Money.
In a surprising upset, the Golden Globe was awarded to Andy Serkis for Longford.
The best performance by an actress in a supporting role in a series, mini-series, or motion picture made for television included nominees:
Rose Byrne for Damages,
Rachel Griffiths for Brothers and Sisters,
Katherine Heigl for Grey's Anatomy,
Samantha Morton for Longford,
Anna Pacquin for Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, and
Jaime Pressly for My Name is Earl.
In yet another upset, the globe was given to Samantha Morton for Longford.
