Age Appropriateness
As with any free toy or craft that you make with and for a toddler, make sure the objects are age appropriate. If your toddler still tends to put things in his mouth, do not include small items that pose a choking hazard. There are many safe items that can be put into the DIY discovery box for toddlers.
As the child grows, so can the discovery box. You will find yourself recycling out some older discovery items and replacing them with new ones.
Materials
The one free item you need to make the DIY discovery box is a box with a cover. The box should be big enough to hold about 20 or 30 objects, but small enough for a toddler to carry. An old shoe box, preferably one with an attached cover will work the best.
Tip: As part of the DIY discovery box project for toddlers, the toddler can help you decorate the box. Use crayons, stickers, paints, or any other fun arts and crafts. This will help the toddler personalize the box.
Benefits
A free discovery box for toddlers is one way to let a toddler explore different objects safely. Since you are the one assembling the box, you have already done the safety checks. The toddler will have fun opening the box and discovering what is inside. You will be amazed at how much fun the toddler can have with a collection of such simple, and free household items.
Discovery Themes for Toddler Games and Activities
Before we put any items in the box, we need to decide on a theme for the discovery box. If you are unsure, you can use items from each different theme list to make one big discovery box. The All-in-one discovery box will have items from any and all of these themes.
Animal Theme
Cut out images of different animals from old and torn books, or from magazines. Also include any animal drawings.
