I recently had a chat with a co-writing partner, producer, and long time legend, Amir Bayyan of the Khalis Brothers, and bassist of the group “Kool & The Gang.” Amir has been a legendary musician for many years and is also a close acquaintance of American Idol Judge Randy Jackson, and long time friend of Paula Abdul. I used this opportunity to gather tips on trying out for American Idol. After the brief conversation, here are a few tips that I was able to gather from the conversation:

1.) Try to get some sort of vocal training: You can join your local choir, your college choir, or just practice singing to music. If you’re going to practice singing at home without any training at all, pick up a micro cassette recorder at your local Best Buy, Target, or Office Depot, and record your sessions. Have someone listen to it, like a friend or a friend’s friend critique it. Do not have your mother listen to your tape because more than likely, she would rather lie to you, then tell you that you should never open your mouth again to hum a melody!

2.) First, find out the exact location of the American Idol audition in your city or state. Plan your travel time and expenses. If you cannot make it to the auditions scheduled for your area, try to make it to the next audition.

3.) Arrive as early as you can and make plans for your lodging: Some people have camped out on sidewalks, in their cars, or stayed in hotels.

4.) Bring lots of food/snacks, changes of clothing, toiletries, possible sleeping bag, pillows, a tent, water, honey, lemons, tea and tea cups. Also bring along a little cart to hold your items in for when the line starts moving.

5.) Make a few friends in line for company and comfort. Be friendly because you never know who may end up in the same hotel room with you in the semi finals before the final 20 are selected!

Takeaways
  • Plan your audition
  • Voice Lessons
  • Be friendly to everyone
Did You Know?
many people believe that they have the ability to sing, but the truth is that they should keep their day jobs.

hey, i decided a while back that im gonna audition for american idol season 7. Im pretty confident about my voice but i just hear these stories about really good singers dont make it.Maybe it is there personalities. I now know to prepare at least 5 songs, so thank you guys for that tip. i juss have one goal and that is to make it to the top 24. cause after that its all up to america. so if anybody else has anymore tips i would really appreciate that. Colt you said that u made it to the group auditions? well how is it that you got there in the first place. what was the process that you went throught. and how did you get past the first round and on to the executives?

i tried out for american idol and got onto the group rounds and got cut. i am kinda a big thing now in my small town, but the judges fet that i wasnt "brave" enought for the top 24. I will be auditioning for american idol 7, and for some advice, make sure that you have at least 5 planned songs. in my audition the judges, (not the 3 main ones), asked me to sing some R&B, and luckily I had one planned, (I am mainly country). But with the three main judges, they only asked me to sing 3 different genres of songs, and i was glad that i practiced a few!

I am auditioning for American Idol season 7, and I have faith that I will be the next American Idol. Even if I don't become the next American Idol, I still won't let go of my dreams. I have been practicing, and I think that I am ready. Please inform me on the date, time, and location in which the next auditions will be held.

Everyone who reads this please understand that American Idol is first and foremost a TV SHOW, not a singing competition. Ever wondered how contestants who aren't that great actually end up in the Top 24? It's because the judges saw SOME talent but even more personality and presence about them. I also plan to audition later this year if they come to Nashville, but please do not think that a good voice is going to carry you past the preliminaries. The beginning auditions have a lot to do with your personality, style, and overall image/persona. Talent comes more into play as you get farther into the competition. Also, remember that there are usually up to 5 songs that American Idol producers MAKE you sing, so be ready for whatever they throw at you. In other words, don't be naive about this whole experience. Train well, practice, expect the unexpected, and show off WHO YOU ARE and hopefully you will go far.

i am getting a voice coach this summer 2007. i am trying out for american idol season 7 and i have a good voice that will hopefully be great after getting a voice coach. the only thing i am worried about is my shyness. what should i do to overcome my shyness in front of the judges and the big crowds and just be myself?
