My husband is a mechanic and in the winter his hands because as rough and scratchy as 80 grit sand paper. Between the cold weather, washing his hands continuously, and him nicking himself, his hand look like something out of a horror movie. I have searched high and low for something to soothe his dry and cracked skin. Many of the lotions I have tried help some but do not have a prayer of actually helping his hands.
In my search to find him relief, I remember a Christmas gift I had gotten a year ago or maybe two, the HoMedics Paraspa Deluxe Paraffin Bath. Not holding much hope in it, but I figured it was worth a shot. I return from the depths of hell (my basement) with a victorious smile on my face, but still harboring doubts as read the promises on the box and look with uncertainly at my husbands hands.
The box is opened and I unload the contents onto the table, the paraffin spa with temperature control, wax, liners, and instruction sheet. The instructions say that the wax will melt in less than 12 hours it should be ready by the time he gets home from work. As the paraffin spa is plugged in and the wax is in to melt, I am still doubtful that it can accomplish what the box and website say, "Hydrates and soothes dry skin for a healthier appearance" and "softens dry hands".
It has been 10 hours the paraffin wax is melted. I turn the control dial down to halfway between warm and melt so that it is ready to go when my husband gets home. The husband is ready to go when he gets home. His hands are dry, sore, and ready for relief. I send him out to wash his hands and apply lotion as per the instruction recommendations.
Now he is ready. His hand sinks into the waxy lagoon provided by the HoMedics Paraspa Deluxe Paraffin Bath but only for a moment and out it comes waiting for the wax to solidify. Ten layers of wax later, he sticks his hands in the plastic lines that are provided for the "ultimate therapy" as suggested by the instructions. After 20 minutes, we pull off the liners and discard the used wax.

I love the feeling of peeling wax off of my hands.
I think the gloves might work just as well, but the parafine seems more "manly" and I can't tell you why though.
very informative article. I work in child care, and since I wash my hands about 50 times per day, my hands get so dry and cracked. this sounds like a nice product to have at home, instead of going to the salon, I might have to give it a try!
