Herbs: How to Grow and Use Lady's Mantle
Growing:
This hardy perennial grows to a height of 6-20 inches depending on the sub-species. Lady's Mantle thrives in areas with full sun or partial shade. It grows best in rich, alkaline loam. The soil should be kept moist, but not over watered. This herb should be planted in the early spring or autumn. Emerging plants need to be thinned so that they are two feet apart. Smaller varieties can be grown indoors. When harvesting this herb, its best to select large leaves which are at their peak during the plant's flowering period. Leaves are usually dried.
Uses:
Lady's Mantle is a versatile herb which is both practical and decorative. This herb can be grown in a hanging basket, and makes an attractive addition to any patio. Although this plant needs sunlight, in hotter climates, make sure the basket has access to afternoon shade, since excessive heat may cause the plant to wither.
The flowers and leaves can be dried and kept as decorations, or used to enhance fresh flower arrangements.
Leaves can add some oomph to an otherwise dull salad. Young leaves are the best, and have a lightly bitter taste. It goes well with spinach, alfalfa sprouts, and a light vinaigrette. This part of plant also produces a green dye when boiled. This can be used to naturally color Easter eggs, or to add a tint to wool or other material.
This herb can be used for cosmetic purposes. Dried leaves can be made into an infusion which acts as an astringent, or it can become a facial steam to treat acne. A cold infusion can be applied in the form of a cold compress onto inflamed eyes, or used to reduce large pores. If put in a cream, Lady's Mantle will work wonders to soften dry skin. Juice extracted from the leaves can be used to naturally fade freckles.
