America's Modern Day Slave Trade: Human Trafficking in the Sex Industry

You Thought Slavery Couldn't Still Exist in America? You Were Wrong

Slavery has been discarded as a terror of the past; seldom is it thought of as a threat in modern day society. This lack of awareness often leads to lack of action. Slavery, in one of its most sadistic forms, still thrives in the shadows of our streets. The modern day slave trade, called
“human trafficking,” is a wealthy business on a global scale. Over 700,000 women are taken prisoner each year in the worldwide network of human trafficking. Approximately 50,000 of these women end up in the United States. To bring the point closer to home, on the East Coast there are many women, ranging between the ages of 14 and 35, being forced into prostitution. In fact, if you live in Raleigh, Miami,  Atlanta, DC, or New York, chances are you’ve driven past a brothel without even realizing it. The revelation is almost surreal, but the story is that of a frighteningly normal reality.

The trafficking industry hides behind a facade of normality. By establishing employment agencies for immigrants, traffickers ensnare victims, usually women hoping to escape poverty in their own country or to send money home for their families. Often, these women immigrate to the U.S. after being promised a job through such fraudulent agencies. Typically, once they arrive they are stripped of their legal papers and passports, beaten, and locked in a room. Understandably confused, a captive woman may examine her surroundings to find a crude mattress on the floor and vermin for companions. Within a few hours, though, her first customers will arrive. Initially, the men, taking advantage of her confused state, may rape the victim. Armed men guard all the brothel doors, so escaping is out of the question. Language barriers usually prevent a victim from seeking aid, and, as brothels exist in the secrecy of the cities, most captured women are lost forever to the shadows.

Slavery is a horrible practise. But it will go on as long as it is profitable for those who use it. The only way to make it stop is to make it so unprofitable and so dangerous that people will not take the chance. One of the reasons why I think slavery should be punishaed by executions. If you enslave others you dont deserve to have a life. You deserve to die. Anyone who is confirmed to be a slaver should be put to death. This sort of crime should not just have a few years of prison sentence. The wealth of the person who has enslaved others should be taken from him/her and used to help exslaves. Take every penny they have and give it to those who had suffered as slaves. I dont care about the rights of slavers. If i could i would hunt down and kill every single one of them. Hell, if i had the army to do so i would go in and clear out the african countries and other places like Chechnya of slave trade by all means neccesary. Slavery should be eradicated, even if it means killing millions

I am ashamed that we as Americans cannot do anything better than what the current role is. As stated here the police do not get involved or are bribed to stay out of it. I cannot believe that. Sickening.

.... If we can get the local law enforcement involved in cities all across America, they can do far more good than a single vigilante can ever do. I don't know how old you are, but you are not as limited as you think. Raise awareness in your school. Research groups in America that DO get out there and stop human trafficking, then join these groups. If you're too young to join, then start a club in your highschool or middle school and then raise money to donate to these causes. Visit all your classes and tell your fellow students about human trafficking. Many people don't know it exists, and the more people you inform, the more likely it is that something will get solved. Tell your teachers. Write your local newspaper editor. Write your local politicians and police force. GET INVOLVED. Your age doesn't need to limit you at all.

As the author of this piece, I actually do more than just write about social issues. I DO try to solve them. I helped start an organization in my city that fundraises and lobbies to help trafficking victims. And when I was younger, I actually sought out trafficking rings in my state. I'm glad you're passionate about helping people, but don't criticize OTHER people for not doing something about these issues and then use your age as an excuse for why you yourself aren't doing more. You can ALWAYS do something. Sadly, the BEST thing that CAN be done is raise awareness. As individuals we can only do so much good without putting our own lives in pointless danger, and even then we may only help one or two victims. A better solution is to get the politicians involved and solve the problem at its root by forcing them to make laws that protect the rights of the victims.

Yes as we all know it is a horrible thing. But is anyone going to do anything about it.The writer of this article probably did help bring this to public awareness but did it really stop anything?Honestly, I think if your going to do anything actually do something.Writing about it may start something but why dont you take it into your own hands.I bet no one else will.Im sick of hearing about peoples problems and them not doing anything to help themselves. If its that important than its worth dieing for.I personally would stop this if I could. But seeming as my age limits me to what I can do in this country I am forced to wait until I can help those people.

When I read this story, my own poem ' A Trafficked Girl Sighs' came to my mind. "Silence would break into scream Like a calm morn pierced with Flight of cackling geese; The love preserved for beau, Amidst fantasies of bliss, Thirsty demons would pollute-- with Filthy lust, accumulated on tongues lewd; And no man of repute would ever smell The touched bloom! The clean bed is no more than sludge A virgin's modesty would sink in; Flies would swarm around, stray pigs rollick-- Satiated lot would leave, throwing pittances A day would come when price of her flesh She would negotiate, Feeding with priority the wealthier wolves; All shame, all fear would finally depart- An inevitable reconciliation to fate!" (published in International Zeitschrift, June 2008)
