In fact, they are currently ranked number one for "Most Popular in Security." This software offers pretty good protection, but specifically allows users who don't want to pay a lot of money for anti-virus software to still be able to keep their computer virus-free (at least that is the goal).
Another free anti-virus software that I am personally familiar with is called "Avast," and so far has received excellent reviews from both CNET (download.com) editors and end users. I know users who have said that Avast detected malware when Norton and McAfee didn't.
So, if you are looking for a decent anti-virus software but don't have the money to pay for Norton or McAfee, then I think either one of these two free anti-virus programs will easily keep your computer, and ultimately your identity, protected.
