In most western cultures it has come to the point where food items that we commonly consume are chosen for their convenience, overlooking what is good for our health. With the United States leading the world in major illnesses such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity and other major illnesses, the time has come to take a close-up look at what the cause is at the root of all of these health issues. What we put into our bodies is obviously what affects our health the most.

The big food manufacturers have been processing and commercializing food in mass quantities for many years now in fact, increasing their production steadily since the start of the industrial revolution. It has made life a lot more convenient to be able to purchase products that are already prepared, but at what cost? A huge amount of the ingredients that are processed into these convenience foods are things that are known to have detrimental effects upon our health. Why then are they being used in our food? The answer is simple; it is because they are inexpensive, thus, increasing the profits for the big food manufacturers by millions of dollars every year.

One huge culprit of this is high fructose corn syrup. This sweetener which is made from corn is dirt cheap, in fact much cheaper then cane sugar. It is commonly found in soda pop such as Coca Cola and Pepsi products, as well as many popular fruit drinks. The problem with this product is that it promotes many health problems such as obesity, diabetes, tooth decay and heart disease just to name a few. One study conducted which involved 51,603 women over an average of four years found that 83% more of the women who drank one or more drinks containing high fructose corn syrup developed diabetes type 2 than those who drank one drink or less per month of the same.

Good article. A lot of people don't know (or don't want to know) what's in their food.
