Uncommon Dog Breeds: The Pyrenean Sheepdog
The Pyrenean Sheepdog has a light, broad skull with a slender muzzle that tapers off to a gradual stop. The eyes are large, almond in shape, and dark brown in color. Smooth-haired varieties have semi-erect ears that stand at half mast, and are profusely feathered. Long-haired and wire-haired have small droop ears with longer hair on the ear flaps. The neck is rather long, yet strong. Overall body structure is lean, lithe, and well proportioned. The tail is lengthy, well feathered, and curled at the tip; it can be left in its natural state, or docked to less than six inches. Smooth-haired dogs have a medium length coat which is silky in texture, and tends to grow longer around the throat, and abdomen. Wire-haired types have longer coats which are wavy and coarse to the touch. Coat colors can range from fawn, gray, and blue. Black and red brindles are not uncommon.
Not a beginners dog, the Pyrenean Sheepdog makes an amenable, albeit headstrong companion. These dogs are independent thinkers with an impish personality. They are natural hams that will keep you laughing. At the same time, if left to its own devices, this breed will take on a dominant role, and assume everything belongs to him. Curious, affectionate, and devoted, the Pyrenean Sheepdog is a small dog with a large personality.
