Perming your hair at home is not as easy as some people think. There is a lot involved in this than just applying a perm solution and you think you will have a great curl. You have to remember you are applying a chemical to your hair and have to think about what type of curl you want to achieve before doing this or you will end up with a head of frizz and no curl. Also you have to think is your hair in good enough condition to do this. There is different types of perm solutions to perform different jobs and uses. There is a alkaline perm which I recommend for hair that is very resistant, stubborn, lack of elasticity, and resistant gray hairs. A elasticity test can be performed by taking a piece of hair from underneath, cut it off, and pull on it to see how strong it is. If it breaks easily that means it's very porous and lacks elasticity. Then there is a acid perm which I recommend for someone who has colored treated hair, damaged hair, frosted hair, hair that's in good condition, relaxed hair. This is a milder perm and not as strong as the alkaline one.

Great article. I plan on giving it a try, just wondering how you keep the rods in. I tried once and the rods kept falling out. Any suggestions for that? Keep up the great work.

You are SO right! I tried to perm a friend's hair and it was extremely difficult. I'll never do that again. Great article.

I always do my own. Why pay someone $50 to $100 to burn my hair. I've never had a salon perm that didn't result in my having my hair practically shaved off.

Love this article! I'm terribly in need of a perm. I'd rather go to a professional. I hate to spend that kind of money (and thusly why I've not gotten one lately), but I'd rather not fry my hair either. I saw my sis with a bad perm. ew. We had to cut her hair mega short and I'm not going that route. :p

I rarely get a perm since my natural hair is wavy and curly. These are smart tips, though!

Great advice! I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to, but I want to try out a perm... Ah so many different things I want to do to my hair lol!

My hair is curly enough so I don't have to perm it. When I did give myself a perm in the past, I just looked like a poodle!

Great advice. I never want a perm again though... not a pretty picture.. and my hair breaks off every time and feels like I have whiskers in my head.

Many years ago I permed my hair at home on a regular basis. Great advice for those brave enough to try it! :)
