One thing that amazes me about so many of my female friends is the way they behave - behavior that often puts their safety, their health or their lives in danger. Sometimes its behavior when they're in their normal frame of mind, but often it's behavior brought on by drinking alcohol. Occasionally, it's also because of smoking pot (a behavior in itself that I don't understand, especially in a country like Thailand where being found with drugs is an immediate jail term). So I thought it was about time I wrote some simple guidelines to help women stay safe, healthy and alive.

1. Don't Go Home With A Man You Have Just Met.

Most of my women friends have done this at one time or another. It's one of the most dangerous things a woman can do. You have no idea who this guy is, you don't know anything about him, his friends, his family, his lifestyle. Going home alone with him before finding more out about him is simply setting yourself up for attack, rape, - even murder. Don't do it!

Instead, get his phone number and call him at a later date. Arrange to meet for coffee or lunch in a public place and find out more about him. Meet his friends, his family, find out where he works and what he does, and find out his marital/relationship status. When you know all this, then is the time you should feel more comfortable going to his home. Of course, women are attacked or murdered at the homes of people they know. But you limit the possibility of this happening to YOU, if you get more information first.

2. If You Have Sex, Use Condoms - Always!

Until you are in a serious, committed relationship with someone, where you know 100% that he is faithful to you, you should always insist he uses a condom. Sexually transmitted diseases are rampant in America and world wide. AIDS is now the leading killer of Americans aged 25 to 44. If you use a condom, you practically eliminate your chances of contracting either a sexually transmitted disease like Chlamydia, or a deadly disease like HIV/AIDS. Not to mention unwanted pregnancies.

3. If He Hits You - Leave!

Thank you for this. My wife and I teach our neices this kind of stuff, also things like how to maim and even blind an attacker. But, by teaching PREVENTION FIRST, a woman will hopefully need never use extreme physical force (But my girls know how if they have to!)

Wonderful advice! It does seem like common sense, but... so many people don't seem to realize or just don't seem to care, for whatever reason.

Sussy, I have two very bright, smart friends with college degrees who exhibit the kind of crazy behavior that is going to get you in trouble one of these days. One of them was raped by a taxi driver in Cambodia because she invited him up to her room. Of course, NOT her fault but by exhibiting such crazily stupid behavior she put herself in a situation that turned out very badly for her. :(

These seem like common sense, but somehow I think there are lots of folks who need to be told and reminded. Good article!
