Spring may bring April showers and May flowers, but for a plethora of high school students it also marks the frenzy that surrounds the purchase of the perfect prom dress and all the accessories that go with it. Fashion magazines are deluged with emailed questions asking for detailed guides for prom trends this year; from prom dress colors, must-have flowers and boutonnieres, glitzy accessories, popular hairstyles, makeup tips, nail designs, purses and handbags, and anything else that might have to do with the prom, inquiring minds housed in nubile bodies want to know!

The year 2008 is no exception and here is some helpful information for 2008 prom-goers who want to arrive in style.

Dress Style

2008 may be the Chinese Year of the Rat, but for young ladies it is a season inspired by Hollywood glamour and glitz. Colors are vibrant, detail work intricate, and the material of choice is smooth satin. Fortunately the prom trends run to the high times of Hollywood, such as the 1960s, rather than its current slump as evidenced by recent red carpet blunders, color combination bloopers, and wardrobe malfunctions. Think La Femme Fashions (which might be compared to the Lauren Bacall personality of dresses), especially their daring red gown design or the stunning beige and copper masterpiece or Mori Lee for the Jackie Kennedy-esque line of style.

Both will populate the ballrooms or high school gyms this year, and it is up to the young lady in question to decide which kind of attire is more reflective of her personality, style and, let's face it, body type.

Shoes

Perhaps not surprisingly, shoes are complementing the outfit rather than stealing its alluring show. Heels are moderate to high and moving away from the clunky clogs of yesteryear in favor of thin and curvy (although not stiletto). Your best bet is muted silver with small, sparingly used rhinestone accents. In the alternative, if you find a designer dress of your liking that is about knee length or slightly shorter, you may decide to complement it with a pair of shoes in exactly the same shade and finish as the dress.
