Ah, Valentine's Day. The day where our husbands are supposed to show us how much they love us by doing special little things that they do only out of obligation, and haven't done sincerely since they were trying to get us to date them. What a special day, huh? Yes, it's true that Valentine's Day has become something of a burden on wives. Instead of that horse drawn carriage we thought would be awaiting us when we got home to whisk us away for a romantic evening, we're met with our men sitting on the couch, waiting for us to come home so we can go with them to some mediocre restaurant once again, just like last year.

We spend the evening arguing and bickering, and end up being disappointed over the flowers, gift, and whatever else we were given. Why can't we just have that one night be perfect? Well ladies, it's time we redefine our idea of perfection. While we should still demand attention, loving thoughtfulness, and special efforts on the part of our men, perhaps we are doing a few things ourselves that are contributing to a not so romantic Valentine's Day each year. Perhaps we could help ourselves, and our husbands, out just a bit by taking the following advice to heart.

The first mistake that so many married women make each Valentine's Day is going through a great deal of effort to create romance for our husbands by selecting "romantic"gifts, only to have them quickly tossed aside. You know what I'm talking about. Leopard print boxer shorts, big fluffy teddy bears, a vial containing a drop of your blood, and what have you, just aren't a husband's idea of great gifts. Neither are items with hearts and smiley faces on them or anything that he would be embarrassed to show his friends. The truth is, no matter how much wives hate to admit it, guys just aren't as into the whole "romance" part of Valentine's Day like we are. Most husbands are just trying not to blow it too badly by giving us something we hate.

Takeaways
  • Ladies, don't set yourself up for disappointment by expecting subtle hints to work.
  • Forget the leopard print boxer shorts and ask your hubsand what he really wants this year.
  • Stop waiting around for the storybook version of romance. Look at what you already have.
