Dear Get Real, You are the idiot. My husband and I are celebrating our 1st anniversary together for several reasons. One, for our dear ones who could not attend our wedding and are excited to share this time together with us now. Two, because we are grateful to be together. My husband was a greiving widower when we met and he is happy again. I survived a life theatening illness with him by my side. Neither one of us ever thought we would remarry and life could be anew. Our friends and family were there through it all so this event is a celabration of life and is for them as a thank you for being there.

Is a "first anniversary party" the latest Hallmark holiday??? I had NEVER heard of this sort of "celebration" until today, when my elderly mother received an invitation to a party honoring one of her nephews and his wife. I decided to google it and am stunned that this is something fairly common (?). I find it absurd in the extreme. I would never attend one of these events and cannot believe that the couple would tolerate such a humiliation. Wedding anniversaries are private matters amongst people of good taste. Ten, twenty-five, fifty, etc, these are socially appropriate, but the FIRST anniversary?? Idiots.
