The beginning of the presidential primaries brings with them loads of annoying television commercials, ridiculous question and answer press conferences that are hilariously called "debates" and polling data that apparently isn't very accurate. An election year also means that there is a ton of fundraising going on all over the nation. One way that a political party or a candidate raises money is through street canvassing.

If you live in a large city, chances are that you have already seen street canvassers. Thus far I've already run into canvassers from environmental groups, both the Republican and Democratic parties and a couple of different candidates. I myself was a canvasser back in 2004 and it was quite the experience. I met some very good friends, had the opportunity to walk around the streets of New York for hours at a time and work for a cause that I believed in.

Many people get nervous about handing a check or cash to a stranger that's holding a clipboard. I'm here to ease your minds about street canvassers. Here is why you should give money to street canvasses.

First reason you should give money to a street canvasser: Grassroots campaigning is important.

To be truthful, my biggest problem with canvassing in general is that it doesn't happen enough. Candidates and parties are more than willing to except fat checks from corporate interest groups or wealthy businessman that attend a black-tie affair because, well, it's easy. Those candidates then have to give back to the wealthy after the election and they do so every time.

Grassroots campaigning, such as street canvassing, reaches out to the common man and woman that won't be receiving an invite to any galas. I'm not suggesting that every person that donates to a canvasser is middle or lower class. More often than not that is the case, however.

Second reason you should give money to a street canvasser: You may forget to donate later.

Great article. We should always be greatful of what we have and give some back!

Mmmmmmmm..... nope. I'm not swayed to hand money over to a canvasser. However now that I know that the canvasser gets a small take of my money, I would be willing to walk with them somewhere, like the local political office, to give them the commission of my donation.

The comments before mine are pretty funny... They say 'good article' ... Then go on to say 'But there's NO WAY I'd give MY money'.... I suppose the only thing I could ask of you is to at least listen to them before deciding.

Call me selfish, but I'm not giving money to anyone, the way our economy is right now! I'm going to be penny pinching to the extreme. Very good, informative article though!

When I see the millions of dollars the candidates are spending to campaign I can not think about the numbers of affordable housing that could be built~especially for those displaced Hurricane Katrina victims and our Iraqi war vets living on the streets. I am not exactly in a financial position to help candidates campaign, but I do trust secure online donations more than a stranger in the street. I do not carry a checkbook around so the "check made out to" thing is not an issue. I also would not support a political party personally because I do not belong to one and vote for candidates not parties.

I have not seen any myself. Personally I like Senator Obama's idea that our government finance campaigns, which I have been saying for years before I heard his name. We are supposed to be a government "of, for and by the people". We pay all kinds of taxes without any choice in the matter except as they we elect, choose for us. They also decide how to spend the money, and do dumb things like borrowing from our Social Security fund and never paying back the loan. Seems a bit unfair to those of who faithfully paid into the system to be told that they no longer have the money to pay out what we were promised. Maybe the part of the gov that borrowed the funds should be forced to pay it back. In this technology age we no longer need political parties to raise funds to support and advertise a candidate. I want my tax dollars to pay for the government to make them all available to me via television and/or internet.
