Uncommon Dog Breeds: The Estrela Mountain Dog
Embed:
A native of Portugal, the Estrela Mountain Dog has been around since the Middle Ages, and is one of the oldest breeds found along the Iberian Peninsula. A direct descendant of Asiatic mastiffs, the Estrela is cousin to the Spanish Mastiff. Its primary function was to herd and guard livestock against predators. In the early 1900s the German Shepherd was introduced to the breeding program. Unhappy with the results, breeders have focus on eliminating traditional shepherd traits since then. In the last twenty years or so, this goal has been attained. Numbers outside of Portugal still remain relatively small, however the Estrela can be found in Great Britain and European show rings. The head is large with a broad, moderately long skull with an elongated muzzle that tapers off to a gradual point. Small eyes are almond shaped, and usually a dark amber. Small triangular drop ears sit far back on the head. The neck is short, heavy, with little throatiness present. Overall body structure is powerful, with dense musculature. Its tail is bushy, and usually kept in a downward position. The coat is thick, and medium in length. Dogs can range from fawn to a red or black brindle.
Loyal, mellow, yet fiercely protective of his family, the Estrela Mountain Dog has become one of Portugal's preferred breeds. People-dependant, the Estrela strongly bonds with its family, and needs to be in their presence at all times. Individuals who do not have sufficient time for their pets should not choose this breed. Around the family, this canine is affectionate, and cheerful. He looks and acts like a gigantic teddy bear. He has a trusting temperament made for children, often exhibiting great patience under the most trying of situations (ie lets dress up the puppy). The Estrela enjoys being amongst children, and tends to be overly protective towards them. The same attitude can be applied to animals the Estrela was raised with. New additions to the family should be slowly introduced.
