Since a small girl, I've had a fetish for hats. Most women (stereotypically speaking) are famous for their love of shoes - but I've never really cared about my shoes ... I just wanted a bunch of hats, and have an ever-growing collection of the things.

Maybe it makes perfect sense, then, that I've been obsessed with making hats just about as long as I've realized I could make them.

This crochet pattern will create a two-color cap that dips very slightly into a point at the back, above which a flower or other accessory can be attached. I've included instructions for basic sizing - sizes from preemie through child's 4-6 are created easily with simple adjustments noted below.

Sizing Notes - A huge variety of sizes can be achieved using this crochet pattern, simply by changing the size of yarn and/or needle you use.

Basic Sizing Guidelines:

G Hook & Worsted Weight Yarn = 6-12 month hat
G Hook & Fingering or Baby Weight Yarn = Newborn hat
F Hook & Worsted Weight Yarn = Newborn hat
F Hook & Fingering or Baby Weight Yarn = Preemie hat

Notes are given in parenthesis below for toddler and child-size versions of this hat.

Cap:

Chain 3, join with slip stitch to form a ring.

Round 1: Ch 3, 2 double crochets in same stitch as joining. 3 double crochets in each stitch around (9 dc). Join with slip stitch to top of beginning ch 3.

Round 2: Ch 3, 1 double crochet in same stitch as joining, 2 double crochets in each dc around (18 dc). Join with slip stitch to top of beginning ch 3.

(For toddler size cap, repeat round 2 once. For child size 4-6 repeat round 2 once and round 3 once.)

Round 3: Ch 3, 1 double crochet in same stitch as joining. 2 double crochets in each double crochet around (36 dc). Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3.

Round 4: Ch 3, 1 double crochet in same stitch as joining. *1 double crochet in each of next 3 doubles, 2 double crochets in next double* repeat around. Join with slip stitch to top of beginning ch 3.

Rounds 5-7: Ch 3, double crochet in each double crochet around. Join with slip stitch to top of beg ch 3.

(For child size 4-6 repeat round 7 once.)
