Teaching the current events portion of Social Studies to your homeschoolers can be quite challenging especially if you have younger children. You don't just want to hand your 10 year old the newspaper and let her have at it. You may not even want a child under 13 reading any further than the funny pages. At the same time, you want your child to be aware of current events and its relationship with history.

If you find the newspaper and most websites to be too PG13 or rated X for your Homeschooling student, you still have some options. There are several kid friendly websites you can use. Here are some current events websites created for kids:

"Kids newsroom's number one goal is to provide educational material useful to its primary user groups: students, teachers and parents." You and your kids can find weekly news information, major news items like the elections, and environmental issues.

Time for Kids is a children's version of Time Magazine. It is jam packed with teaching resources for grades k-6 and has a special page for teachers with more resources. Top stories come in both English and Spanish Version.

Social Studies for kids while not as fancy as the other sites provide exactly what it promises. From death reports of notable people to glossaries, to fun facts and up to date stories, this website will give you and your kids plenty to discuss, without pushing all of the worlds bad news on them at once.

Kids Post is a kid's version of the Washington Post. The website features Maps of the World, has many fun facts, and links to Washington Post stories that are kid friendly. During elections time (like now) the site features information on how elections work. The site also includes information about possible careers your child might want to start looking into. There is one thing you need to careful of though. Kid Post also has links to things you kid may want you to buy.
