Old t-shirts, flannel shirts and even jackets, which you no longer wear, can have useful pockets that can be turned into a dream accessory for some little girl. Before throwing away clothing remove zippers, buttons - and pockets - to use again.

Two pockets - identical or coordinating - can be turned into a cute purse for a young girl. The pocket purse can be made from your old clothing, or hers. The pocket size will determine how large the purse will be so choose an adequate size for your girl. If she's very young, small pockets will do, but if she's a little older, large denim pockets are even better.

Place one pocket, wrong side facing upwards, on a flat surface. Glue or stitch the handle in place. Now glue or stitch the second pocket, right side up, onto the first pocket. The pockets should now have wrong sides together with the purse strap caught in between them, at the top corners.

Purse straps can be made from a folded piece of cloth, ribbon, strands of beads, a piece of leather, or similar materials. Make sure you measure to see how long the purse strap needs to be. Don't compare it to purse straps of yours; little girls need smaller straps on their purses.

It's not mandatory that you cut pockets from other garments to make the purse. You can cut pockets from scraps of fabric to use for the purse. Cut even smaller ones, to place on top of the larger ones, so there are extra compartments for your daughter's new purse. This design can be done whether you cut pockets from existing garments or make your own.

You can further embellish the pocket pocketbook by using paint markers, fabric paints, faux jewels, sequin, and other craft supplies. Write the girl's name on the purse, create fancy designs, or just place a jewel in the center of each pocket. Different looks can be made so that your little girl will have a pocket purse for every occasion.

To keep the purse closed you can purchase hardware or just use a velcro dot. You'll find either one at a craft store or sewing department. Most purse hardware is very inexpensive and the velcro definitely is. You'll also find handles, decorative metal pieces, and other purse embellishments, at a craft store.

Takeaways
  • Save pockets, zippers and buttons from old garments to use for future projects.
  • Stitch or glue two pockets together to make a purse for your little girl.
  • Embellish the pocket purse with faux jewels, purse hardware, or even fabric paints.

Cute idea! My older daughter loves to do craft projects. We'll have to try this one out. I love that it can be made from recycled clothing! Good job! :)

I have got to try this one out. I have three little girls who seem to be into carrying purses around even though they are empty over half of the time.
