Every once in awhile I get this overwhelming desire to get out and 'just help someone, anyone'. I believe it is our human nature to want to help others in need. There are several ways to give. Whether it be sending money to a needy third world country or actually helping the local community. You can always donate to the Good Will.

Okay here is a little confession of mine, I not only donate to them, I buy from them. They truly do have some nice clothes. I love shopping there. Not to mention, the money goes to helping disabled people, so it is well worth it. While looking for places to donate your time, in the Shreveport area, I have come across a few that I would love to share.

You may chose to help homeless families with children at The Shreveport Providence House on Cotton Street. Volunteers can read to the children, clean, tutor, answer phones, cleaning and painting. Time is valuable and there is nothing that is more wonderful then spending that with the less fortunate. These families are almost always without any other family other then who they have there in the home. If you chose to volunteer, you may want to visit their website The Providence House, Shreveport, La.

There is a place for everyone in this world and that even includes the mentally challenged, or retarded. The Arc of Caddo-Bossier is here to help the retarded realize and reach for their goals. They are there to educate and support the families of the mentally retarded. They ask that you contact them by phone for more information (318) 221-8392.

Helping families spiritually and physically The Volunteers of America-Northern Louisiana may be who you want to donate your time to as well. They are here to build strong families to better the community and are extended throughout the United States. The state their mission "to reach and uplift all people." They include churches, service and civic centers, volunteers and others. As a volunteer there are several things that you can do. The main things are to help the youth and children There are those with disabilities and special events. Contact for more information (318) 221-2669

Excellent article. I have volunteered with the North-West Louisiana Chapter of the Red Cross off of Jewella St. And my mom has volunteered at the YWCA shelter in downtown Shreveport. Just thought I'd add to your list. There are great opportunities for personal growth through volunteering. Great work Katy!!!!!!!

Great Info!!! We typically clean out the kids' toybox now and then. (If we didn't, we'd be overflowing! LOL) and we take their toys to Goodwill.
