Wearing nail polish can be a wonderful accessory that will give you that finished, "polished" look. But how do you choose which color to wear, especially when today we have over 10,000 colors on the market to choose from. In earlier years you simply matched your nail polish to what ever color of lipstick you were wearing. But are things still that simple today?

Gone are the days of matching your nail polish to your lipstick. You want to coordinate you nail polish to your lipstick--yes. In fact, you want to coordinate your lipstick to your entire look. But your nail polish is no longer restricted to the color of your lipstick.

For casual day wear, particularly if you are wearing jeans, you can basically wear any color you want to. Your options are unlimited. You can coordinate it with your lipstick if you want to. You can match it or coordinate it to your top.

For an evening look, generally you should match or coordinate your nail polish to your dress. But one can also coordinate one's nail polish to the tone of your eye shadow. For example, if you are wearing your eye shadow in a smokey eye construction using dark grays or browns, then you should wear any dark nail polish of your choice, like red or berry. If your eye shadow is any color other than dark grays or browns, like plum, then use whatever color offsets your eye shadow. Try burgundy.

Color Rules

While you're no longer restricted to matching your nail polish to your lipstick, there are a few color rules concerning what colors look best with your skin tone and what season of the year it is.

The Color for YOU

Women with fair skin look great in berries, rosy pinks, sheers, and light pastels. Although, women without any yellow tones in their skin should go for berries and pinks with more blue tones in them, while women with yellow tones should go for berries and pinks with yellow bases.

Women with olive or bronze skin look great in anything with a gold tone like orange-reds, fire-engine red, and yellow-based browns. Avoid anything with a blue base.

GREAT TIPS! I DON'T WEAR POLISH TOO OFTEN, OR COLORED LIPSTICK, BUT IT'S GOOD STUFF TO KNOW.

Tamara, this is a good article. However, I am a bit confused. What exactly is fair skin?

I have an olive complexion, so I can pull off bright red nail varnishes. But I don't often worry about matching the colours of lipsticks and nail varnishes if I am wearing both. Sophie
