I picked up a 10-ounce Dinty Moore beef stew, in a microwave bowl, on my last shopping trip to Wal-Mart. What caught my eye was that I could microwave it for just 90 seconds and then take it to a friend of mine that I know doesn't cook herself a dinner.

The weather the last couple of days, here in Florida, has turned cooler, and the nicest hot meal I could think about was beef stew.

I was rushing out of the house last night, and didn't have time to cook, so I took the Dinty Moore beef stew out of the cupboard, removed the cardboard sleeve, made a slit in the plastic film on the top, and popped it into the microwave oven. I set the timer for 1 min. 30 seconds and that was it. As I have a turntable in my microwave I didn't even have to rotate the product.

The meal was complete and hot so I drove to her house, got her a fork, spoon, napkin, and a drink. I then peeled off the plastic film on the top of it, gave it a stir, and suggested she eat while it was hot.

She loved the meal in a bowl and told me how tasty it was. And there was plenty for a single elderly lady.

I normally make my own beef stew but often use a can of Dinty Moore beef stew as a base. I then combine my beef stock, onions, vegetables, and when the meal is cooked I then drop homemade dumplings into the bubbling stew. This way I have more control with extra vegetables and less of the fats and sodium that this product on it's own contains.

The 10 oz. (283g) vacuum sealed bowl of beef stew contains potatoes, beef, water, beef broth, carrots, modified food starch, corn flour, beef fat, salt, tomato paste, caramel, coloring, sugar, and flavoring.

It has 250 calories and the calories from fat are 100.

Total fat 11g.

Saturated fat 5g.

Trans fat 0g.

Cholesterol 40 mg.

Sodium 1250 mg.

Total Carbohydrate 22g.

Dietary Fiber 2g.

Sugars 3g.

Protein 15g.

It provides 30% of our daily value of vitamin A, 4% of vitamin C, 2% of Calcium, and 10% of iron.

The sodium content to me is extremely high at 52% of the daily value. However, for the odd cold night here in Florida I don't think that will do you or me any harm unless you have high blood pressure and are watching your intake.

Wow! That's a lot of sodium! But at least the lady you took it to liked it. Sophie

The sodium is really high on these but, like you said, now and again isn't going to kill you :-) Good review! I've always liked those Dinty Moore meals.
