The reasons an individual can be afflicted with low bone density issues are numerous. Many assume that simply substituting more calcium into their diet will eventually counteract conditions such as osteoporosis, but this is simply not the case. Calcium is only one part of the complex system of vitamins and minerals your bones need in order to regenerate and stay strong. Adding the right superfoods to your diet may help more than a simple calcium supplement. The ingestion of too many acidic foods plays a greater role in the cause of osteoporosis than a lack of calcium. Sweet, processed foods such as cookies, cakes, candies, sweeteners, soft drinks, foods that contain high-fructose corn syrup, white flour, and refined sugar all raise the pH level in the blood and create an acidic environment that is unhealthy for just about every part of the body. The calcium and magnesium that contribute to strong bones is leeched from the skeleton in an attempt to even out the pH level of the blood. Although you may love dessert, you may want to skip the cake if you want to avoid a fragile skeleton.
While these sweet treats are slowly leeching the strength and density from your bones, you must realize that your bones do not actually have the calcium and magnesium to spare. Even when the pH levels of your blood are balanced, the minerals are flushed through the waste system and into the kidneys where they can build up and form stones. Kidney stones are often very painful and in some cases might require surgery. Any food that is made with overly refined simple carbohydrates, like those listed above, could rob your skeleton of the elements essential to keeping it strong.
There are, however, foods that may help to reverse this process and encourage your bones to absorb calcium. Leafy green vegetables such as celery, cabbage, and broccoli help to maintain the right pH balance in the blood. Organic vitamins will add bone-essential minerals and vitamins into your system. Vegetables from the sea, such as kelp and seaweed, are naturally alkaline and will also help keep your blood in equilibrium. Sprouts will aid this process as well.
