Discovering loose laminate on a countertop is upsetting, but discovering a burn is an absolute nightmare. After taking good care of a plastic laminate countertop, the last thing you want to find is irreparable damage. Unfortunately, you can be ever so careful, and even still, it can become damaged, burned, and the laminate can become loose.

If you find your plastic laminate countertop burned or coming off, don’t panic. You don’t have to replace the entire countertop. It isn’t hard to repair a plastic laminate countertop if it isn’t too badly damaged. Surface burns can be rubbed out, and there are solutions for removing or concealing deeper burns. Loose laminate can be reattached properly so it will never come loose again.

Repairing Loose Plastic Laminate

If the top layer on your countertop is coming off, it’s not difficult to repair. All you need to repair loose laminate on a countertop is contact cement, a few strong toothpicks, and a rolling pin.

Begin the repair by pulling back the loose laminate and brushing contact cement on the base of the countertop. Coat the back of the laminate by laying it back down and pressing it lightly against the base. Pull the loose laminate back up, and prop it up with toothpicks until the contact cement is very tacky and almost dry. Read contact cement label instructions, and keep the laminate propped up about five minutes less than the estimated drying time. Doing so will ensure the laminate stays in place and adheres properly to the countertop base once it’s pressed into place.

After the allotted time has passed, remove the toothpicks, and press it into place. Immediately go over it with a rolling pin to work out any air bubbles and smooth it down. Allow the glue beneath the laminate plenty of time to dry before setting anything on the countertop in the area of the repair.

Hi, I just had a huge overflow in my sink--and onto the floor yesterday on my new laminate countertop...unfortunately the installers didn't caulk the back of the countertop since we are planning to install tile & the water seeped down behind the counter in the space between the wall where I couldn't dry. This morning the entire countertop behind my corner sink has water damage and has bubbled up from the particle board--any remedies for this scenario where you cannot get toothpicks under the laminate since the damaged bit is butted up against a wall? And, even though we were advised by the installers against caulking the back of the counter because of our plans for the wall (a caulked edge would prevent super- even tiling), any chance the countertop warranty will apply since the overflow (and standing water for 25 minutes) was my fault? The parts of the sink area that were caulked, (i.e.) the seam, that were standing in water for the same amount of time are OK.

The advice concerning minor burns was amazing and really helped me!! Thanks so much to whoever wrote this article... My friend kindly gave me the keys to her new Manhattan apartment for a week whilst she's on a business trip to Canada... Needless to say, me, a smoker, just had to mark the territory where I was welcomed.. I MADE A CIGARETTE BURN ON HER BRAND NEW WHITE KITCHEN COUNTERTOP!!! This morning whilst putting away the dishes I saw an ugly brown burn... My heart sinked.. I don't know what force made me go to her bedroom, take a white-out (!!!) from her drawer and try to conceal the ugly burn..Don't ask, I couldn't tell you what I was thinking...Obviously the white out made matters even worse, as it stuck to the spot but made it look even more obvious. So in desperate panic I started searching for a repairman for damaged, burned countertops...and found this miracolous article. For like half an hour at least I scrubbed the mark with 3 different kinds of toothpaste, and eventually
