When you hear the word alien, or think about the earth being visited by aliens, chances are your first thought will be UFOs from another world. But did you know that there have long been movements that believe alien visitors come to us not from another galaxy or solar system, but from right here on earth? Or should I say right here within earth. These aliens are collectively known as the hollow earth aliens. The idea of hollow earth aliens really got its start in the 1940s, courtesy of some science fiction stories that regularly appeared in Amazing Stories magazine. One of the best movies to ever get the MST3K treatment followed up on the idea of a race of humans living deep-deep-within the bowels of earth. The movie was called The Mole People and it actually is entertaining even with John Agar and without Tom Servo, Crow and Mike Nelson.

It was a writer named Robert Shaver, a regular contributor to Amazing Stories magazine, who came up with the basis for the idea of hollow earth aliens. Shaver created the idea of a race of hollow earth aliens who were non-human, which he termed the Dero. The Dero inhabited a series of enormous caves that could be found across the expanse of the planet. Shaver knew the Dero quite well, apparently, as he was able to explain that they were actually responsible for many of the great climate events that regularly rocked the surface of the earth, including hurricanes. (Perhaps Pres. Bush would have hired Robert Shaver as his climate change specialist instead of Michael Crichton if he'd been around.) Shaver's stories of the Dero and the hollow earth aliens might have disappeared along with a thousand other stories of alien visitors from outer space and inner space and other dimensions had his stories not rang curiously strong with the readers of Amazing Stories. In fact, there were soon thousands of letters to the editors of Amazing Stories confirming Shaver's wild idea of an alien race inhabiting caverns deep beneath the surface of the earth.

Outside of what we're able to comprehend--what we see IS reality and what we ultimately accept in a comfortable way. By the way, remember the 1976 film "At the Earth's Core" with Doug McClure and Peter Cushing? I loved that film as a wittle kid...

Let's not forget Edgar Rice Burroughs and his "Pellucidar" series that took the Hallow Earth theory to interesting places--but made it appear that a primitive race exists there and run by a reptilian race. And then he created a bunch of other non-human entities that were supposed to live in Pellucidar. Interesting that he even threw his self-created Tarzan into the mix in one of those books. Of course, some people think those books are based on theoretical science--but I'm one more to believe that any "alien" race (which I usually equate with something more spiritual in a physically alien form) to have secret sanctuaries under the ocean. That may give some equation to beings living under the earth--perhaps even back to ancient times to avoid being detected. As far as the Earth being a part of a Middle Universe--it all depends on what your philosophy is behind dark matter in our universe. In the sense of a higher power--it's likely. Outside of what we're able to comprehend--what we see

I feel like I was caught in a philosophy class because you've got me thinking so much about this now. one of the problems with theories, even apparently absurb ones. I tend to think "But what if...?" and then it is a muddle. A bit akin to discussions about time and space without any of the "objections in between" as one movie person said. I think it came from Harvey but I'm sure I bungled the quote and context. Well, pretty sure...
