5 Biggest Snubs of the 2008 Oscar Nominations

No Oscar nominations would be complete without a fair share of upsets, surprises, and snubs. Whether it's your favorite actress, a Golden Globe nominated or winning film, or an Academy favorite, snubs are often the talk of the town when the Academy
5 Biggest Snubs of the 2008 Oscar Nominations
Award nominations are announced. With the Oscar nominations this morning, movie goers are full of chatter--who got the snub this year?

Angelina Jolie, A Mighty Heart
Angelina Jolie has already won an Academy Award for her work in Girl, Interrupted. Past Oscar-worthy material is often an indication of future nominations, but it wasn't the case for Jolie this time around. She did garner a nod from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for her work in A Mighty Heart. This big screen adaptation of the book by Mariane Pearl, wife of journalist Daniel Pearl, was a disappointment at the box office, despite the buzz surrounding the film before it's release. Still, Jolie's portrayal of the anguished and pregnant Pearl was superior. This snub was unexpected by many, as box office failure rarely plays a role in nominations.

Denzel Washington & the film American Gangster
Both Denzel Washington and the film American Gangster were unexpected snubs from the Academy this year. Washington has won been nominated before, as well as won. In addition, he received a nomination from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for his work in American Gangster. However, this year both Washington and the film were slighted after receiving nominations during the Golden Globes.

Angelina Jolie should have been nominated for "A Mighty Heart", not Laura Linney for "The Savages".

I really think Keira should have taken that one!

I am very disappointed that Into the Wild was snubbed, except for Hal Holbrook. It was a wonderful movie and definitely one of the best fillms I saw all year. Emile Hirsh did a remarkable job. Excellent screenplay, directing, acting.

I was really surprised that Sweeney Todd was left out, I hope Johnny Depp wins.

I heard American Gangster got little critical acclaim, which is shocking, because I love, love, loved it. A movie I'd see multiple times, and I don't rewatch movies. Although I did love Denzel (come on, what lady can resist that smile?!) - I think it was Russell Crowe who did the best acting. He was a greasy, overweight and over, um, socialized detective, and he did a great job at making you root for him anyway. Ok - that's my two cents!

Excellent reporting. I wonder if public reaction IS finally playing a part in some of the snubs? There were mixed reactions to Depp's singing in Sweeney Todd and I certainly met my share of people who hated that film. I didn't hear anything bad about A Mighty Heart. I'm really out of the loop on some of these movies so I won't try to comment about those. Sweeney Todd is the only one I know where most people came down firmly on either the "loved it" or "hated it" category.

I was surprised by some of those that made it in.
